University-industry collaboration for energy justice: workshop

SESSION CANCELED

Chris Eveleens, Laurens Hessels and Vincent Baarslag from the Rathenau institute share their insights on the role of science and technology in the energy transition. These fields can enable or hinder particular transition pathways. But who steers science and technology, and how does research benefit or harm certain groups? University-industry collaboration, in particular fossil fuel industry, has become contested. Under what conditions, if any, can collaboration take place? In an interactive scenario workshop we will formulate fictive guidelines for collaboration in order to elucidate the views of different actors.

Art, Action & Aspiration Gallery: Transitioning through art, games & exercises (EN/NL)

Climate casino questions with Joerie Reinders (Leiden University) and the workshop “Klimaatkoppen” “Climate heads” by Laura van Rutten (Klimaatmuseum) (EN/NL).

Energy Justice in Practice: Impact of energy tariffs on households and model-based decision support (EN)

In this panel discussion, we bring together policy-makers and experts from the domains of energy modeling, political science, energy journalism and grid operation to discuss justice issues surrounding household energy tariffs in The Netherlands. They will discuss: tradeoffs between energy justice and technical complexities, how politics, policies and models interact in the design of energy tariffs schemes and how energy justice features in all this. By Thijs van de Zand (NVDE).

Design for Decolonial Justice: Re-imagining energy transitions as an allyship (EN)

This workshop explores decolonial justice in energy transitions, featuring perspectives from academia, engineering, and Indigenous rights activism. It will highlight “Design for Values” as ethical approach to creating fairer, more inclusive energy technologies. Myra Colis (Indigenous Igorot activist & Chairperson MABIKAs Foundation NL), will share how energy projects and land-use policies affect Indigenous communities. Participants will engage with a game prototype developed by TU Delft’s decolonial group and Ángela María Díaz (researcher Universidad de las Américas) to translate reflection into action.

Embedding citizen participation in local energy planning: Oldham and Community-Led Energy Planning (EN)

Ellie Radcliffe and Laura Williams from Carbon Co-op, UK, will be sharing insights from their work over the past four years developing a methodology for community-led energy planning in partnership with Oldham Council.

Participants will leave with an understanding of:
• How Carbon Co-op are practically integrating principles of energy citizenship, energy justice and community wealth building into their work.
• The UK policy context shaping their work in this space.
• How Carbon Co-op are working.

A facilitated discussion exploring the ways in which participants’ own policy context enables or frustrates citizen participation as part of the energy planning process.

Infrarium: Can you handle the energy grid stress test? (EN/NL)

The Infrarium, Energy Grid Game simulation reveals the challenging decisions that the energy sector will face during the current energy transition. It allows participants to physically and emotionally experience, the urgency, cohesion, mutual dependence and complexity of the energy transition. By Geertje Bekebrede (TU Delft).
